Nasdaq connects European trading platforms to Boerse Stuttgart's blockchain settlement system

The collaboration seeks to address market fragmentation across Europe by facilitating distributed ledger-based settlement for tokenized financial instruments.

Nasdaq announced it has entered into a partnership with Boerse Stuttgart Group's tokenized settlement infrastructure Seturion, aiming to integrate its European trading platforms with a system built to process settlements of tokenized securities through distributed ledger technology.

Based on the announcement released Monday, the partnership will initially concentrate on structured products and is designed to facilitate more rapid settlement of tokenized assets throughout capital markets in Europe.

Seturion provides support for various asset classes on both public and private distributed ledger networks and enables transactions to be completed using central bank money or cash that exists on-chain. According to Boerse Stuttgart, the platform has been developed with the intention of being accessible to a wider network of financial institutions operating throughout Europe.

Through this partnership arrangement, Nasdaq plans to integrate its European trading platforms with Seturion, enabling tokenized securities that are traded on these markets to complete their settlement via the platform. According to the companies, they intend to broaden participation by bringing in more issuers, brokers and financial institutions as the initiative develops.

The collaboration is designed to tackle the fragmentation problem that exists within Europe's post-trade infrastructure, a landscape where securities settlement is managed by numerous national systems, each operating under different rules and procedures. Through the implementation of distributed ledger technology, the companies indicate that a unified platform has the potential to minimize settlement timeframes and reduce operational complexity throughout European markets.

The European Central Bank in April said there was "an urgent need to integrate Europe's fragmented capital markets, not only in the area of post-trade but also in supervision and other areas."

The infrastructure is built to function within current European regulatory frameworks, including MiFID II and the DLT Pilot Regime, regulatory mechanisms that permit financial institutions to conduct tests of distributed ledger technology in the trading and settlement processes for tokenized securities.

In February, Boerse Stuttgart Group said it would merge its cryptocurrency business with Frankfurt-based digital asset trading company Tradias as part of a strategy to expand its presence in institutional crypto markets.

Traditional exchanges push deeper into tokenized securities

Exchange operators continue to increasingly investigate tokenized alternatives of traditional securities as components of initiatives aimed at modernizing the infrastructure of capital markets.

Nasdaq announced today that it had formed a partnership with Kraken, a US-headquartered crypto exchange, along with tokenization infrastructure provider Backed to create a gateway designed to facilitate tokenized equities while maintaining issuer control.

In September, Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation said it plans to bring a subset of US Treasury securities onto the Canton Network, with the long-term goal of expanding tokenization to a broader range of assets eligible for custody at its subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company. The market infrastructure operator processed around $3.7 quadrillion in 2024.

In January, the New York Stock Exchange and its parent company Intercontinental Exchange said they were developing a platform for trading tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds that would support 24/7 trading and blockchain-based settlement.

Last week, Intercontinental Exchange announced it had taken a board seat in OKX after investing in the crypto exchange and plans to offer NYSE-listed tokenized stocks and derivatives to OKX users starting in 2026.
