Fairshake PAC Invests $8.6M in Illinois Congressional Contests Before Midterm Elections
A cryptocurrency-supported political action committee known as Fairshake, together with its affiliated organizations, has invested $8.6 million in Illinois congressional contests, representing more than a sixfold increase compared to its 2024 spending.

The political action committee known as Fairshake, which receives backing from cryptocurrency firms including Ripple Labs and Coinbase alongside other industry players, has disclosed additional expenditures targeting Illinois congressional contests as the United States midterm elections approach with fewer than eight months remaining.
According to documents submitted on Sunday to the Federal Election Commission, Fairshake disclosed a $16,000 media purchase aimed at opposing La Shawn Ford, an Illinois state representative, in his congressional bid for 2026, contributing to approximately $1.8 million the committee has already spent on this particular race in 2026. Primary elections in the state are scheduled to take place on March 17.
These Sunday filings came after additional disclosures from Friday, which revealed that the political action committee had deployed over $5.5 million in efforts to oppose Juliana Stratton, Illinois Lieutenant Governor, in her Democratic campaign for the United States Senate during the upcoming midterm elections. Meanwhile, Protect Progress, an organization affiliated with Fairshake that backs Democratic contenders, disclosed approximately $84,000 in expenditures supporting Nikki Budzinski in her 2026 House campaign to represent Illinois, along with $90,000 dedicated to Robin Kelly's Illinois Senate campaign.
In total, as reported by The Daily Northwestern, the political action committee together with its affiliated organizations has invested approximately $8.6 million in these Illinois contests, representing a sixfold expansion from its spending during the 2024 election cycle for races in this Midwestern United States state. The committee maintains a substantially larger reserve of funds sourced from the cryptocurrency sector and additional contributors, with $193 million reported in its treasury as of January, and has made public statements indicating it will "oppose anti-crypto politicians and support pro-crypto leaders" throughout 2026.
Instead of providing direct campaign contributions to candidates, Fairshake along with its affiliated organizations typically finance advertising campaigns either supporting or opposing political figures, frequently focusing on topics entirely disconnected from cryptocurrency policy matters. Political action committees are mandated to disclose their spending activities and contributions to the Federal Election Commission.
Potentially influencing Texas primaries?
Fairshake has already taken action in 2026 targeting several early state primary elections in advance of the midterm contests.
During the previous week, voters in North Carolina, Texas and Arkansas cast ballots for some of the initial candidates being determined for the general election. Protect Progress has been reported to have spent $1.5 million in opposition to the reelection campaign of Texas Representative Al Green, who has maintained his congressional seat since 2005.
Although Democrat Christian Menefee, who receives a "strongly supports crypto" rating from the advocacy organization Stand With Crypto, failed to secure an outright victory over Green, both contenders will proceed to a runoff election scheduled for May.
